Pre- and Post-Donation Advice

Before donation

  1. 1. Have adequate sleep
  2. 2. Drink sufficient water

Have your favourite drinks 1-2 hours before donating blood.

  3. 3. Do not give blood on an empty stomach

If you have not had breakfast or lunch, or if you feel hungry, please inform our staff to prepare some food for you.

  4. 4. Suitable clothing

Do not wear tight long-sleeved clothing. In case of cold weather, you may put on a sweater or a cardigan instead.

After donation

Please pay attention to the following points after donating blood.

Within 24 hours after donating blood:
  • Drink more fluids to replenish the fluid lost during blood donation.
  • Avoid lifting heavy items or over-exerting the donation arm to promote healing of the venepuncture site.
  • If there is bleeding from the venepuncture site, please raise your arm and press the site lightly. The adhesive plaster can be removed after 5 hours.
  • If you feel dizzy after leaving the blood donation venue, please sit down, or preferably lie down, and drink more liquid.
  • You may resume normal activities, but leave the strenuous exercises until the day after donation. This is a precautionary measure to help your body adapt to the decrease of blood volume.
  • If you feel ill or have any abnormal sensation, please remain in our center and inform our doctor or nurse.
  • You may find the venepuncture site swollen as a result of bleeding into the subcutaneous tissue. The swollen state generally disappears in about a week’s time and will not cause any long-term impact on your health.
  • If you experience symptoms such as fever with headache, coughing, diarrhoea and muscle pain within 2 weeks after donating blood, please contact our doctor at 28752522.
  • Male and female donors can donate blood every 3 and 4 months respectively. This is to ensure that donors have replenished sufficient quantity of red cells before the next donation.
  • If, for any reason, you suspect your donated blood is not suitable for transfusion, please immediately inform us by telephone at 28752521 (24-hour telephone recorder) and leave us your donor number or ID card number, so that we can trace the blood accordingly.

All your personal information will be kept in strict confidence in accordance with Law no. 8/2005 (Personal Data Protection Act).

Your sincere cooperation is of paramount importance to your own health as well as the safety of the blood recipients.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to you.
